my kit!

/* My kit arrived a week ago, but I've apparently fallen off the blog-weekly wagon so hard that I broke a few bones and got trampled by the Keep Up With Ravelry Posts wagon behind it. The kit is really excellent though and deserves a good kvell :) */

Dear Winifred,

Thank you VERY much for the most excellent kit that you sent me!  I'm sorry that we couldn't meet up at the Fibre Festival in Maryland and do the exchange in person.  In hindsight we should have realized that muggle transportation is unreliable at best, and perhaps studied up on Mr Weasley's modification to the Reparo charm that he uses on Flat Tires.

As you can see below, your Owl delivered all the packages intact.  They made a very cheerful collection :)

First to answer your question: the chocolate is amazing.  I've tasted quite a few varieties and brands of chocolate over the years, and the Lindt Cherry & Chili is the clear winner.  The chocolate has this interesting-but-yummy texture, and the filling stuff is REALLY good.  (Where did you find it???  I went to my local supermarket and they didn't carry it :(  We might need to trade some yarn for more of this stuff, it's ridiculous).

The bag is great! Isn't the ballband stitch pattern fun to knit up?  And it came out so perfectly, I know you mentioned having Bag Knitting Issues earlier but it really turned out terrific.

I'm very excited to try the Square Cake pattern with the sparkly yarn you sent (oooooh shiny!), and the pattern place-markers will come in very handy :)  The Malabrigo is so soft! I think it might become a pair of CocoKnits' Malabrigo loafers (once I figure out how to make the pattern work out and produce slippers that are my size).

Thank you again for a most excellent kit!  See you in the Hallways of Hogwarts next term?

Avada Kedavra!

Cass might have her Crucio list, but I am starting an Adava Kedavra list. Mostly for people that talk about food during Passover, while I'm stuck eating Matzah.

The AK List:

According to this "Knitting Addiction" quiz,

"You scored only 48%. Either you are a beginning knitter, or you just don't have an addictive personality.  If your family accuses you of addiction they are insane.  In fact, you are so non-addicted, I'm surprised you took this test!"

WTF!!?! Cass can you sic Crucio's babies on them?

Spring!

Spring has supposedly hit Hogwarts this week. Considering that the temps are hovering in the 30's, I'm a little skeptical. On the other hand, flowers are starting to bloom, the sun is shining way more than it used to, and colors are begining to creep back into the washed-out winter landscape... so maybe it has arrived. We shall see :)

I picked up some fun stuff for my RAOK on Sunday. Let's just say I got 4 for myself and my friends to play with, and 2 to send to... someone :) I hope she likes it and doesn't think it's silly... but really, there's nothing better than going outside in the spring and ------ - ----, especially if you live anywhere near a -----!

Ugh, brain freeze.  More later :)

I am seriously grumpy today. Instead of working on my homework, I think I will get cracking on the Jeopardy game I am writing.  What better way to teach safety procedures to adults right? lol

Quidditch 2

1. On which day did the Order of the Phoenix come to get Harry?
c. Saturday
I'm not sure if you're allowed to fly Broomsticks on Shabbat. The prohibition against driving a car is based on the prohibition against lighting a fire, because you are burning gasoline in the engine. Which clearly wouldn't apply with a broomstick. However, if I recall correctly, one may not ride a horse on Shabbat because one might break a branch, which is prohibited. The legality of riding Broomstick would probably depend on how likely it is to break a twig off the tail in flight. Also, I'm not sure if you need to take into account that the Order knew Death Eaters would be firing at them and breaking pieces off the brooms. It would depend on how strong the causality is. I think.

2. During all this chaos with voldemort and the Death Eaters, people still had lives to live and Ron's oldest brother, Bill decided to marry Fleur Delacour? Who were the uninvited guests at Bill and Fleur's wedding?
b. Death Eaters
I don't think "Death" is kosher. I wonder if there were Jewish Death Eaters?

3. Voldemort had seven Horcruxes hidden in different places. Six of them were hidden at the Gaunt shack, Hogwarts, a cave, inside Harry, inside his snake, Nagini and Tom Riddles Diary. Did Voldemort hide the last Horcrux inside the Malfoy's vault at Gringotts?
b. No

4. Why did the Dumbledore's move to Godric's Hollow?
c. The father went to Azkaban

5. Harry and Hermione read a part of "Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore," written by Rita Skeeter. Then they met Dumbledore's brother Abeforth and he told them the same story, just with a few details changed. Which of the following did Aberforth and Rita Skeeter agree on about Dumbdore's past?
b. That Dumbledore was friends with Grindelwald for a while.

6. When Harry and Hermione visit Godric's Hollow, they visit the graveyard to see Harry's parent's graves. Harry walks by a tombstone that we later learn belong to tone of "The Three Broother'. The brother buried there once owned what?
b. The cloak

7. The Trio finds out that Luna had been kidnapped by the Death Eaters , and that they won't give her back until they got Harry Potter. Why did they kidnap Luna?
a. Her father sided with Harry and Dumbledore

8. After Voldemort killed Snape, he left the room and Harry came out from under the cloak. Snape gave Harry some of his memories all the way from when he was a child to just months before. Harry dived into the Pensieve and which of the following did he not see?
c. Snape and Lily having fun in a potions class

9. On the search of the Lost Diadem, Harry finally gets to talk to the Gray Lady. Who was the Gray Lady when she was alive?
c. Helena Ravenclaw.

10. Which of these is not one of Harry or Ron's children?
d. Victoria

crazy week

This week was CRAZY long.  I had a day off school on Tuesday to celebrate Purim, but instead of sleeping in and taking it easy I was on the go from 8:30 in the morning 'til 10:30 at night!  It was really fun, but now I know why there's so many things we aren't allowed to do on Shabbat and all the other holidays.  Holidays are exhausting, and limiting ourselves from using the phones, the computers, the cars, and all that stuff keeps us from running ourselves ragged.  I guess Chanukah is easier because there's 8 days to get everything done?  Anyways, it was a fun day with friends and family, and of course Mishloach Manot

TGIF!

Snow!!!

Sunday night and Monday morning, about a foot of snow fell at Hogwarts!  I loooooove snow, but I don't much like being stuck indoors while there is Snow! on the ground!  So I was kinda grumpy Monday.

How do you cheer up a grumpy Slytherin?  In the words of one of my favorite musicals: Schadenfreude.  I won't name names, but someone thought it would be funny to cover the doors and windows of Madam Hooch's broomshed with a mound of snow and then pour water over it... It froze over, and now the shed is 100% sealed! No flying lessons or Quidditch practice until they can figure out how to melt the snow away without burning down the shed.  Of course the Slytherin brooms were all in our common room for the "Broom Waxing Seminar" that Ophelia Crookshanks taught Sunday evening.  Mwah ha ha ha ha

Off to purchase some more yarn for the shawl I am knitting for my Grandma.  It's her birthday this week.

Curses!

My dear fellow Slytherins,

I am calling for an all-out assault on Ravenclaw House.  One of those too-clever witches cursed me this morning!  I didn't turn around fast enough to spot which 'claw it was that hexed me when I felt the zap this morning, but she had long blonde hair and was wearing a blue-and-bronze scarf.  Stupid chit ran down a corridor before I could catch her or see who she was.  But I know it was a Ravenclaw, and they shall pay!

It's a pretty clever curse - I have zapped everything I've touched today (including the soap in the ladies' room, which was very weird) with static electrisity.  We need to see about casting this charm on the other House's seekers before the next Quidditch match.  It's made knitting pretty interesting - I charged my yarn cake, and it started unraveling!  Students are avoiding me (and my shocks) in the hallways, which does make getting to class easier, but still.  If anyone knows a counter-curse I would be very, very grateful.

Your Head Girl,

Quinn

Dear Belladonna,

Thank you very much for offering to meet me in the Greenhouse after classes today to help me with my Devil's Snare project.  Sewing is not my forte, so attaching the vines (straps) to the rest of the bag is something I have been dreading.

Shall I bring some Butterbeer and Chocolate frogs from the kitchen?

The lace shawl that I am making hit a snag. I have to rip back 6 rows! :C I need some chocolate and probably also a Cheering Charm to help me through, I am NOT looking forward to this :(

On a more positive note, I finished a couple of projects this weekend, a third Robin's Egg Blue Hat in Slytherin colors and a green dishtowel that will be a handtowel. Plus I found some cute Ceramic buttons to go with both of my REB Hats - I am super picky about buttons it seems, because it took about 20 minutes to decide which to get, lol.

Other fun news - I taught another classmate (er, muggle coworker), Joanne, how to knit today!! She was already a crocheter so she picked it up super quickly.  She saw my red calorimetry and wanted to make her own.  First we are doing some swatches of knit and purl stitches, but I think that she'll be ready to cast on by Wednesday!  My other classmate, Carol, passed us knitting on her way to the ladies' room, and pointed out that I have a cabal going - I've taught 4 of my other classmates to either knit or crochet.  Hehehe, soon I will have my entire class (er, department) knitting along during our lunch breaks.  Am I a good subversive Slytherin or what?

See you tonight!

Quinn

::passing the parchment over a candle flame and muttering the correct incantation reveals the rest of the letter::

Bella, how was the fact-finding mission to Stirling?  Are you having any luck on the Rufus angle?  I can check with my Auror uncle, if you still want to keep your father clear of things.

I have noticed some very strange goings-on in the Forbidden Forest of late.  It seems we have two trysting lovers, but that might just be a cover for something related to the Ackerly girl....  More to follow tonight.

The 13th Triangle

Dear J,

A lot has happened since I wrote you last.  Today I made a significant breakthrough in the case!  I was knitting a purse in the common room and Belladonna Boomslang, a fellow Slytherin, stood up and asked if anyone wanted to raid the kitchens for some hot beverages.  Even with the fireplace, it is always damp in the common room under the lake, so I went with.  We started talking, and it turns out she is Mad-Eye Moody's daughter!  So I turned the conversation towards the Ackerly girl's disappearance, and the end result is we're launching our own covert investigation into the matter.

In other news, I am having a blast in class.  Literally, Hagrid had us tending Blast-Ended Skrewts again :D  I love animals that can take of themselves in a fight, if ya know what I mean.

My fellow Slytherins and I have been knitting a lot in our common room.  I am getting all caught up on the House gossip.  Miss Lovegood is already mooning over the DADA professor, and some of the girls have a plan to... shall we say, nip the romance in the bud.  Tee hee.

It's hard to concentrate on the pattern for my lace shawl with all the bawdy suggestions being flung around the room - I've dropped more stitches than I care to think about!  It's a fun project, I am basically combining 4 different types of lace repeats in my own order.  It's hard to say exactly how much yarn it will take but I'm aiming for a 5-6" wide shawl, and the estimates at the back of the book say around 800 yards.  I have 3 400+ yard skeins of a pretty purple yarn, so I have room to play without worrying about running short.

One thing that would make the project a bit easier - a row counter.  I can never remember from one day to the next what row I left off on, but luckily I am good at "reading my knitting" so I can match my previous row to the pattern, and figure out what I should be doing for this row.  Some of the gals have very pretty ones in their knitting bags.  Looks like I'll be pulling out the beading supplies this weekend and tinkering with a design.  I'm sure the gals will be happy to help, right?

Hope all is well by you.  Are you remembering to water my plants?  Twice a week, and extra before a holiday.  Ttys,

Quiz #1

Dear J,

Well, the term has begun.  I haven't had much time to investigate things yet though.  All the students are too busy getting set up for the new semester to even breathe, much less gossip about Ackerly's disappearance.

The traditional "Beginning of Term Feast" was held Tuesday, and I've begun to make some contacts.  Slytherin has Herbology with Hufflepuff on Thursdays, so I expect I'll get more information soon.

In the meantime, I've signed up for an extracurricular activity that sounds promising.  Lavender participated in the Hogwarts Sock Kit Swap her last 3 years she was at Hogwarts, and many of the students participating this year were here when she was.  Bet you never thought my knitting and crocheting would come in handy on an investigation, but like Master Lend says, There is no useless knowledge.

Queen Frysia the Fierce, one of my prefects, asked that Slytherins participating in HSKS fill out a quiz to help students in other houses get to know them better.  I hate icebreakers like this, but as Head Girl I need to set a good example.  It's hard enough keeping the Slytherins in line as it is!  ::Sigh::  This quiz isn't so bad, but I can only imagine the kind of touchy-feely drivle the Hufflepuffs are going to write for their House's quiz, or the sheer verbosity of the Ravenclaws'....

That's all for now.  Looking forward to our rendezvous next week, it has been far too long!

Q

************************************************************************************************************************************
 1. What are your three most favorite colors?
Green, Blue and Purple

2. What are you three least favorite colors?
Brown, Yellow and Orange

3. Your favorite candy is _________________.
Chocolate and twizzlers (but I'm trying to cut back)

4. Draco, Lucius, or Snape?
Snape. Hate the Malfoys.

5. Do you knit, crochet, or both?
Both

6. What type of kit did you ask for?
Anything besides socks.

7. Acrylic—has its uses, should all be burned, best yarn to work with (choose one)?
Definitely has it's uses! I've recently discovered that there is "good acryllic" - I LOVE Berroco Comfort - and bad acryllic - such as Red Heart.

8. Who is the Slytherin Head Girl this term?
Meeeee!

9. Name four “extras” you would love to receive in your kit.
Something local to my spoiler
Something to read
Some tea
Something totally random that makes me laugh (like when Elle sent me a 16" turkey feather from her backyard - but not another feather please! One is enough :)

10. What are your three most favorite scents?
Grapefruit, Lolita Lempicka, Vanilla, any citrus scent.
Basically anything that's not coconut is cool

11. Do you prefer salty or sweet snacks?
Both. Depends on my mood I guess.

12. Which Slytherin is the Keeper of the Crucio List?
Cassandra Puddlemere

13. Do you really need more stitch markers?
Need? No, 'cuz I make my own.  Want? well... If you happen to make your own and want to send me some, I will definitely use them.  And I love seeing how other people bead things.  But don't go out and buy them!

14. Dpns, circular, or straight?
Like acryllic, they all have their uses ;)  I use mostly dpns or circs now, since you can always flat knit with them but the reverse isn't true (with straights).

15. What yarn makes you squee?
I'm really not picky, I love all yarn that's soft and/or doesn't feel artificial (think like red heart).  I have a thing for Lamb's Pride and Cascade 220, 'cuz they come in SO many pretty colors and they're a PITA to find locally.

16. Favorite HP Movie?
HBP

17. Favorite HP character?
All of them? Lol.  Ah, Harry, Ron, the twins, Ginny, Hermione, Tonks, McGonagall, Hagrid...

18. Who was your first choice for DADA professor?
Justin Hartley

19. What is the Slytherin Common Room called?
 The Snake Pit

20. What makes you worthy of being in Slytherin House?
Despite my Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff traits, I am a master planner and strategist (one could say schemer) and they are lucky to have me.

Welcome to Hogwarts

Dear J,

Much has happened since I received my letter of admittance to Hogwarts last Wednesday morning. Headmistress Wartbobble called me into her office that evening for a private conference with Wisteria Lovegood, her deputy Headmistress.  As we guessed, they want me to investigate the disappearance of the Ackerly girl from Hufflepuff.

Wartbobble has her suspicions.  The three of us mostly discussed her relationships with the other students.  Lovegood mentioned some trouble with a Miss Beanswallow two years ago over some shrimp, but said that after a field trip to the States last November the two of them returned thick as theives.  Last term there was a very troubled boy in Hufflepuff that might know something; start digging around and see what you can find on a Rufus Huffindor.  After Lovegood left, Wartbobble mentioned some trouble between her and Ackerly over a professor last term that resulted in a duel.  They seemed to patch up their relationship afterwards... but all's fair in love and war, revenge is a dish best served cold, etc.

I have plenty of suspects to investigate just amongst the student body, and then there are Death Eaters, muggles, and magical creatures to consider as well.  Wartbobble wants me at Hogwarts until this thing is resolved one way or another.  She and Lovegood thought it would be easier to maintain my cover if I moved into another House, so when Elanor Cadogan volunteered to head Hufflepuff since the Huffles were all too scared to replace Ackerly, they decided to install me as the new Slytherin Head Girl instead.  I still have plenty of access to Hogwarts as a Head Girl, and as the new Administrative Assitant I can probably find the Hufflepuff password to do some snooping around their common room.

It'll be tough to maintain my cover while I'm in full investigative mode, but I think I am going to enjoy Slytherin House.  Despite their reputations, the Slytherins aren't quite evil as much as... sneaky, fun-loving, and very creative with following rules :)

I had a pre-term meeting with my 2 Prefects, Cassandra Puddlemere and Queen Frysia the Fierce, and we've come up with some excellent ideas for the semester.  Then the Ravenclaws discovered that a certain Emma Wigworthy was switching from Ravenclaw into Slytherin, and declared an outright prank war.  They clearly have no idea what they are messing with, my House is going to crush their sorry excuse for an offensive.  But you know Ravenclaws, they think they know everything just because they read a lot.  It will be good to remind them that street smarts are important too.

Awaiting your dossiers on Huffindor, Beanswallow, and Lovegood.  In the meantime, I will compile a longer list of suspects to include in my next missive.
